Sensitive & Complex Investigations

Sensitive issues can arise in any organisation, from charities and SMEs to large, complex bodies. Allegations involving misconduct, safeguarding concerns, fraud, whistleblowing, bullying or harassment, or matters involving senior individuals can be difficult to handle. If managed poorly, they carry significant legal, regulatory, and reputational risk.

Durrant Riley Advisory provides independent support for sensitive and complex investigations, combining objective, practical and qualified investigation expertise with clear, defensible reporting. Our work is led by a triple-qualified counter-fraud and investigation specialist holding a PG Diploma, CIPFA Certificate, and CFPAB ACFS accreditation, with over two decades of experience handling sensitive cases across the charity, public and commercial sectors. Every engagement is handled with discretion and tailored to your organisation, the nature of the allegation, and the level of risk involved.

Some organisations engage us for full independent investigations; others for triage, fact-finding, or support responding to regulators or other stakeholders. Many use our services to ensure sensitive matters are handled fairly, proportionately, and with appropriate independence.

Where independence matters most

Sensitive allegations are difficult for any organisation, but they are often hardest for charities, which is where much of our specialist experience lies. When a concern involves a trustee, the chief executive, or another senior figure, an internal investigation can struggle to be seen as credible, however well intentioned. Independence is not a luxury in those cases; it is what makes the outcome defensible. Charities also carry specific duties: safeguarding allegations and serious incidents of misconduct or fraud are frequently reportable to the Charity Commission, and trustees must be able to show that concerns were handled properly and at arm’s length where required.

The same need arises elsewhere in different forms. SMEs face employment-law exposure and the difficulty of investigating colleagues impartially in a small team. Public bodies face audit, statutory duties, and public scrutiny. Whatever the setting, our role is the same: to bring objective, qualified independence to matters where credibility, fairness and discretion are essential and, for charities, to give trustees confidence that their safeguarding and reporting duties are being met.

How We Help

Strategic Service

Sensitive Investigations Strategy, Governance & Assurance

This service provides confidence that sensitive matters are handled properly and consistently.

We help Boards and senior leaders ensure they have the right governance, processes, and decision-making structures in place to deal with serious or sensitive allegations. This includes reviewing investigation frameworks, escalation routes, independence, oversight, and how decisions are documented.

The focus is on defensibility and fairness, ensuring that, if challenged, the organisation can demonstrate that issues were handled lawfully, proportionately and in line with regulatory expectations.

Why this is good for you

  • You reduce the risk of mishandling sensitive matters
  • Decision-making and escalation are clear
  • Independence and fairness can be demonstrated
  • Boards and senior leaders gain assurance over a high-risk area

Best for: Boards and leadership teams, including trustees, seeking confidence that allegations and concerns are managed consistently, lawfully, and proportionately.

Foundations

Investigation Frameworks & Readiness

This service establishes clear, practical arrangements for handling sensitive issues.

We help design or refine investigation frameworks, policies, and procedures covering matters such as whistleblowing, misconduct, safeguarding, fraud, bullying and harassment, and conflicts of interest. This includes defining roles, thresholds for escalation, and when independent investigation is appropriate. We pay particular attention to safeguarding, where getting the response right, and knowing when a matter must be referred or reported, carries the highest stakes.

Why this is good for you

  • Staff know how to raise concerns safely
  • Managers know how to respond appropriately
  • Safeguarding and reporting thresholds are clear
  • Investigations are consistent, controlled, and defensible
  • The risk of ad-hoc or poorly handled responses is reduced

Best for: Organisations without formal investigation processes, or where existing arrangements are unclear or out of date.

Active Investigation

Independent Investigations & Fact-Finding

This service provides independent, objective investigation support when credibility, discretion, or impartiality is essential.

We carry out sensitive investigations and fact-finding exercises, including reviewing evidence, conducting interviews, analysing documentation, and producing clear findings and recommendations.

Our approach is proportionate, fair, and focused on establishing facts, not assigning blame unnecessarily.

Why this is good for you

  • Independence and objectivity are assured
  • Allegations are handled fairly and professionally
  • Findings are clearly documented and defensible
  • Internal relationships, trust, and credibility are protected

Best for: Sensitive allegations, senior-staff matters, whistleblowing concerns, safeguarding issues, or situations requiring external independence, including where a concern touches a trustee or the chief executive.

Outcomes & Remediation

Outcomes, Remediation & External Engagement
